To best pass on the faith to others, the Diocese of Rochester is committed to ensuring our catechists, both professional and volunteer, are trained. 

Parish Catechist Certificate
Over the course of two years, those who pass on the faith to others in faith formation programs, youth ministry, or sacramental preparation are asked to complete the following:

  • Foundational Level I (completed within one year of beginning)
    • Creed
    • Eucharist
    • Sacraments
    • Catechesis 101
  • Certified Level II (completed within two years of beginning)
    • Morality
    • Prayer
    • Scripture
    • Theology of the Body

Parish Catechetical Leader Certification
Over the course of two years, professional ministers who oversee a program of formation (children, youth, adult, sacramental preparation, etc.) and have not received a degree in Theology are required to complete the following:

  • Orientation to Ministry (within the first year of employment)
  • Foundational Level I (completed within the first year of certification process)
    • Creed
    • Eucharist
    • Sacraments
    • Catechesis 101
  • Certified Level II (completed within two years of certification process)
    • Morality
    • Prayer
    • Scripture
    • Theology of the Body
  • Two Catechetical Retreats*
  • Eight in person Professional Development Skills Courses*
  • Four online or in person Professional Skills Courses*

* Completed concurrently with Foundational and Certified Levels
