Mary, the First Disciple

Mary, the First Disciple, is designed for students in grades 6-8. The program teaches them more about Mary, and about themselves.

  • The Marian Medal program is written for young Catholics, grades 7-10, to enable them to “proclaim the greatness of the Lord.” This is accomplished by actively involving the participants in an understanding of Mary as a model of openness and spirituality—a woman of the church.
  • Through various projects, discussions, and liturgical celebrations over a period of months, the participants are provided with a unique opportunity to develop new insights into their personalities, friends, parents, and the world around them.
  • Girls in grades 6-8 who are enrolled in Girl Scouts.
  • Each Girl Scout have her own Mary, the First Disciple book.
  • The book is designed for the Girl Scout and her parent(s) or group leader to work together.
  • Diocesan and Girl Scout Youth Protection policies must be followed.
  • Emblem Books may be obtained by contacting mark.capellazzi@dor.org at the Diocese of Rochester.
  • Although the book could be completed in four to six hours, the goal of earning a religious emblem is to help the Girl Scout develop a personal relationship with God, so it is suggested that steps be spread over several weeks. This will help the Girl Scout understand that this is a long-term commitment, not a one-time project.
  • Actively work on the activities with her parent(s) or group leader.
  • Keep the Religious Emblems Coordinator (Pastor, Youth Minister, or Faith Formation Director) informed of her progress.
  • Actively work on the activities with their scout. She may need your help with Bible readings and getting information.
  • Keep the Religious Emblems Coordinator (Pastor, Youth Minster, or Faith Formation Director) informed of their progress.
  • The leader’s guide is separate from the youth workbook and can be obtained by contacting mark.capellazzi@dor.org at the Diocese of Rochester.
  • When a Girl Scout completes all steps, she is to present the book to her parish priest or the priest representative and the book is reviewed with the Girl Scout.
  • After the pastor or his representative signs the book and the application form, only the application form, order form and check are sent to:
