The Spirit Alive
The Spirit Alive program is designed for students in grades 9-12. The program assists them in discovering how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling them to greater participation in the church’s ministry.
Program Objectives
- It assists scouts in discovering how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling them to greater participation in the church’s ministry. The four chapters cover:
- The Holy Spirit Alive in Scripture
- The Holy Spirit Alive in the Catholic Church
- The Holy Spirit Alive in Prayer
- The Holy Spirit Alive in Your Life
- Activities are an integral part of The Spirit Alive process. Because different people have different learning styles, there are four categories of activities to choose from for chapters 1-3: written, artistic, interactive, and digital. The activity in Chapter 4 is the service component of the process.
Eligibility
- Girls in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in Girl Scouts and have completed the Marian Medal.
Requirements
- Each Girl Scout have her own The Spirit Alive book.
- The book is designed for the Girl Scout and her parent(s) or group leader to work together.
- Diocesan and Girl Scout Youth Protection policies must be followed.
Getting Started
- Emblem Books may be obtained by contacting at the Diocese of Rochester.
- Although the book could be completed in four to six hours, the goal of earning a religious emblem is to help the Girl Scout develop a personal relationship with God, so it is suggested that steps be spread over several weeks. This will help the Girl Scout understand that this is a long-term commitment, not a one-time project.
Scout's Role
- Actively work on the activities with her parent(s) or group leader.
- Keep the Religious Emblems Coordinator (Pastor, Youth Minister, or Faith Formation Director) informed of her progress.
Parent(s)/Group Leader Role
- Actively work on the activities with their scout. She may need your help with Bible readings and getting information.
- Keep the Religious Emblems Coordinator (Pastor, Youth Minster, or Faith Formation Director) informed of their progress.
- The leader’s guide is separate from the youth workbook and can be obtained by contacting at the Diocese of Rochester.
Program Completion
- When a Girl Scout completes all steps, she is to present the book to her parish priest or the priest representative and the book is reviewed with the Girl Scout.
- After the pastor or his representative signs the book and the application form, only the application form, order form and check are sent to:
Diocese of Rochester
c/o Mark Capellazzi
Diocesan Liaison for Catholic Scouting
1150 Buffalo Road

- Details regarding the annual religious emblem ceremony will also be mailed to the scout at the appropriate time.
